Children’s Course:

Young Illustrators: A Contemporary Look at Polish Legends

Course for children aged 6–12

This course is a journey through Polish legends told through the language of contemporary illustration.
At each class, children discover one legend, discuss its meaning, and create their own illustration.

During the course, children:

  • work with acrylics and pastels

  • create artworks on canvas and on paper

  • learn how to turn a story into a visual image

  • understand illustration as a way to express ideas

Each class includes:

  • a story about the legend

  • discussion of its meaning

  • creation of a finished illustration

 

Course Program (8 Classes)

1. Toruń Gingerbread

The legend of Toruń gingerbread

🎨 Technique: acrylic, canvas

📖 About the legend:
In Toruń lived a kind baker who made gingerbread with care and love. He shared it with others, and over time his baking became a symbol of the city.
It is a story about kindness, craftsmanship, and how simple work can leave a mark on history.

🖌 What children do in the illustration:

  • turn the story into a visual narrative

  • show the process and idea of the recipe through images

  • learn to combine several elements into one clear composition

 

2. The Wrocław Dwarfs

Legends of the Wrocław dwarfs

🎨 Technique: acrylic, canvas

📖 About the legend:
Dwarfs are small guardians of Wrocław. They help people, love jokes, and live quietly alongside the city’s residents.

🖌 What children do in the illustration:

  • create a symbolic character

  • express personality through shape and pose

  • learn to simplify the image while keeping what matters most

 

3. The Trumpeter and the Tower

The legend of the Kraków hejnał

🎨 Technique: pastels, paper

📖 About the legend:
Long ago, a trumpeter noticed danger and began to play to warn the city. He did not finish the melody, but he saved Kraków.

🖌 What children do in the illustration:

  • work with silhouettes

  • learn to express sound through imagery

  • build mood using colour

 

4. The Poznań Goats

The legend of the goats on the town hall

🎨 Technique: acrylic, canvas

📖 About the legend:
Two goats ran onto the town hall tower and began butting heads, making the entire city laugh. Since then, they have become a symbol of Poznań.

🖌 What children do in the illustration:

  • convey movement

  • work with symmetry

  • show humour and emotion without facial features

 

5. The Forest Spirit

Final legend

🎨 Technique: pastels, paper

📖 About the legend:
The forest spirit is a symbol of living nature, which takes care of the world when treated with respect.

🖌 What children do in the illustration:

  • work within a green colour palette

  • explore different shades of a single colour

  • combine character and landscape into one image

 

6. Pan Twardowski

The legend of Twardowski

🎨 Technique: acrylic, canvas

📖 About the legend:
Pan Twardowski tried to outwit fate and ended up suspended between heaven and earth.
It is a story about choice and responsibility.

🖌 What children do in the illustration:

  • tell a story through silhouette

  • learn to express meaning without faces

  • understand that form can be more important than details

 

7. The Guardian Mermaid

Legends of water spirits

🎨 Technique: acrylic, canvas

📖 About the legend:
The mermaid is the guardian of water and balance. She protects nature and punishes those who destroy it.

🖌 What children do in the illustration:

  • build atmosphere and mood

  • create the image of a protector

  • work with a strong, cohesive composition

 

8. The Wawel Dragon

The legend of the dragon

🎨 Technique: acrylic, canvas

📖 About the legend:
A dragon lived beneath Wawel Hill and was defeated not by strength, but by cleverness.

 

Course Outcomes

By the end of the course, children will:

  • create 8 finished illustrations

  • become familiar with Polish legends

  • learn visual storytelling

  • develop a sense of form, colour, and composition

Classes: once a week, Sunday at 11:30 AM
Duration: 1.5 hours
