How Are Soy Candles Made and What Affects the Quality of the Finished Candle?

A soy candle may seem like a very simple object: a container, a wick, wax, and fragrance. It is only when making a candle yourself that you discover its quality depends on several elements that need to work together. What matters is not only the type of wax, but also the choice of wick, the amount of fragrance, the working temperature, and the cooling process.

Candle making is therefore a combination of hands-on work and learning about the properties of the materials. As with paints and other artistic techniques, your first attempts reveal relationships that are difficult to understand from instructions alone. Why does one candle burn evenly while another develops a tunnel? Why does a fragrance that seems strong in the container become weak once the candle is lit? The answers are most often found in the making process itself.

Where Does Making a Soy Candle Begin?

The foundation is soy wax, a material made from oil obtained from soybeans. Different varieties are available, including waxes designed for container candles and those intended for moulds. Not every wax behaves in the same way, so it is worth following the manufacturer's recommendations regarding melting temperature, fragrance addition, and pouring temperature.

Before starting, the container and wick also need to be prepared. The container should be clean, dry, and suitable for exposure to high temperatures. The wick should be positioned as precisely as possible in the centre and secured so that it does not move to one side while the wax is being poured.

This may seem like a small detail, but it later affects how the candle burns. A flame positioned too close to the side of the container can cause uneven heating.


Wax Temperature Matters

The wax should be melted gradually while its temperature is carefully monitored. Heating it more aggressively does not improve or usefully speed up the process. Overheating can alter the properties of the material, while a temperature that is too low may prevent the wax and fragrance from combining properly.

A wick that is too small may cause tunnelling, meaning that the wax burns primarily down the centre of the candle. A wick that is too large, on the other hand, may produce an excessively high flame, consume the wax too quickly, cause soot, or make the container overheat.

For this reason, choosing a wick is best treated as a process of testing. Even two candles of a similar size may require different solutions if they use different types of wax or fragrance compositions.

How Is Fragrance Added to a Candle?

The fragrance composition is added to the melted wax in a specific proportion. Adding more fragrance oil does not automatically produce a stronger or better candle. Every wax has a certain capacity for holding fragrance, and exceeding the recommended concentration can negatively affect the stability of the mixture and the way the candle burns.

It is also important to mix the ingredients thoroughly but gently. The fragrance should be distributed evenly throughout the entire mixture.

When evaluating a finished candle, a distinction is made between the fragrance noticeable before lighting and the fragrance released while the candle is burning. A strong scent from an unlit candle does not guarantee an equally strong effect once it is lit. The final result is influenced by the properties of the wax, the fragrance composition, its concentration, and the way the candle burns.

Why Is Choosing the Right Wick So Important?

The wick is not simply an element that supports the flame. Its thickness and construction should be matched to factors such as the diameter of the container, the type of wax, and any additives used.

Pouring and Cooling – A Stage That Should Not Be Rushed

Once the mixture has been prepared, the wax is poured into the previously prepared container. Temperature matters at this stage as well. Incorrect pouring and cooling conditions can affect the candle's surface, the adhesion of the wax to the sides of the container, and the appearance of irregularities.

The candle should cool gradually at a stable temperature, without being suddenly moved between very warm and cool environments. Soy wax is a natural material, and its surface will not always be perfectly smooth. Minor changes in texture or characteristic crystalline deposits do not necessarily mean that the candle has been made incorrectly.

Once the wax has solidified, it is better not to carry out a full burn test immediately. The candle needs time for the wax and fragrance composition to stabilise. The recommended curing period depends on the materials used.

What Really Determines the Quality of a Candle?

Appearance is only one of the criteria. A well-made candle should, above all, burn predictably and safely. The behaviour of the flame, the formation of the melted wax pool, the temperature of the container, and the release of fragrance are all important.

This is why burn testing is an integral part of candle making rather than simply a final check of the finished product. The candle is observed over successive hours of use to determine whether the parameters selected at the beginning actually work well together.

One common mistake among beginners is changing several elements at once. If, during the next attempt, you use a different wick, change the amount of fragrance, and alter the pouring temperature, it becomes difficult to determine what caused the change in the result. Much more can be learned by modifying one parameter at a time and recording the results.

Candle Making as Working with a Material

One of the most interesting stages of learning to make soy candles comes when you stop simply following instructions and begin to understand how the material behaves. Each new attempt shows how temperature affects the wax, how the wick changes the way the candle burns, and why the same fragrance composition can behave differently in different formulations.

There is also a visual aspect to consider: the choice of container, colour palette, proportions, and the overall character of the composition. There is plenty of room for creativity, but it should go hand in hand with knowledge of the materials and the principles of safe candle making.

A good soy candle is therefore not the result of a single “secret” ingredient. It comes from correctly matching the wax, wick, and fragrance composition, controlling the temperature, allowing the candle to cool gradually, and carrying out subsequent tests. Understanding these relationships offers much more than simply learning the sequence of steps - it allows you to create future candles with greater awareness and identify the causes of problems when the result differs from what you expected.
