Japanese painting course: sumi-e

The course consists of 8 sessions lasting 2.5-3 hours each.

Classes will take place on Tuesdays once a week. No special preparation is needed, suitable for both beginners and those with basic skills.

Sumi-e is not just painting; it's the art of conveying the soul with a brush. In this master class, you will immerse yourself in a world of tranquility and beauty, learning to work with the energy of the moment.

In a friendly atmosphere, we will step by step explore working with ink and watercolor on rice paper, starting with simple techniques and gradually progressing to more complex ones. Additionally, each session will include meditation and tea time to make our learning experience even more enjoyable. Let's create beautiful artworks together and learn to see the beauty in the world around us!

Course Program:

LESSON 1. Red Spider Lily

• Introduction to the sumi-e technique.

• First steps in working with ink and rice paper.

• Learn proper brush control.

• Create your first composition.

LESSON 2. Maple

• Learn how to paint the texture of a tree.

• Practice arranging branches and leaves.

• Add movement and balance to the composition.

LESSON 3. Bamboo

• Master the essential brushstrokes for bamboo stalks and leaves.

• Learn to express rhythm and natural growth.

• Create a balanced bamboo composition.

LESSON 4. Orchid

• Learn to paint elegant leaves and petals with confident brushstrokes.

• Improve brush control and line quality.

• Create a refined floral composition.

LESSON 5. Crane

• Study the proportions of the crane and how to convey movement.

• Combine expressive brushwork with delicate details.

• Create a composition featuring a flying crane.

LESSON 6. Landscape – Mount Fuji

• Learn the principles of atmospheric perspective.

• Practice creating depth using foreground, middle ground, and background.

• Discover how to use negative space as an essential part of the composition.

• Paint a landscape featuring the iconic Mount Fuji in the sumi-e technique.

The uniqueness of this technique lies in the use of authentic Eastern materials:

• Rice paper

• Pine soot ink

• Eastern brushes

• Watercolor paints

All materials are provided during the lessons.
